Moda Fabrics Grunge fabric is a cotton quilting fabric that looks textured and slightly distressed, even though it’s smooth to the touch.
At first glance, it reads like a solid. But up close, you’ll see layers of tonal variation, faint speckling, and soft brushstroke-like marks. The effect is subtle, almost like paint that’s been lightly scumbled across the surface. It gives depth without turning into a busy print.
The base is 100% quilting cotton, usually around 44–45 inches wide. It feels the same as standard quilt-shop cotton: smooth, medium weight, easy to cut, sew, and press. The “grunge” part is printed on, not woven in, so the texture is visual rather than physical.
What makes it popular:
-
Adds depth to solids. It behaves like a solid but doesn’t look flat.
-
Blends easily. Works well as a background, border, or blender fabric.
-
Huge color range. It comes in dozens and dozens of shades, from muted neutrals to saturated brights.
-
Versatile style. Fits modern, traditional, and even art quilts.
